Moving to Hanoi
In recent years, it has become easier to move personal and household effects into and out of Vietnam. However, there are some basic rules and guidelines that one should follow to make sure that everything goes smoothly.
First always use the services of an experienced international mover, and obtain information from your local embassy regarding visas and customs regulations. These can change quit rapidly in a developing country, so your movers should always ask for up-to-date information at the time of submitting his quotation
It is helpful so sort your houldhold goods by catergory. Besides unearthing those long-forgotten items you have borrowed from friends overtime, sorting provides an opportunity to update your household inventory list, and that will come in handy for purposes of insurance, import taxation, and exit.
Prior to packing your effects, ensure that you photograph any antiques that you wish to import ( an antique, in Vietnam, is anything made prior to 1945). You will need two copies, one to present to the Ministry of Culture when your consignment arrives, and one to show when you leave. Ensure that all antiques are clearly marked on the packing inventory, so that they can be easily identified on arrival in Vietnam
Make sure that your movers pack all CDs, DVDs, VCDs, books, and cassettle tapes separately. The Ministry of Culture must clear these when they arrive, so it is safer if these are packed together for ease of access. You don’t have to provide a detailed list of these items
Your movers should compile a clear and reasonably concise packing inventory. These will need to be translated into Vietnamese, so the average contents of each carton should be listed, and nothing should be described as “miscellaneous” or “ packed by owner”. You don’t have to priovide the detailed, valued list of everything that you wish to import. However, it is recommended that the number of CDs, VCDs, DVDs,….be listed and, if possible, that detailes on the make, model, and serial number of each major electrical appliance be noted
